What We Do

The Greenwich Land Trust (GLT) works every day to protect our community by conserving and caring for open space in the Greenwich area. By accepting gifts of open space, the GLT is able to protect that land from development forever.  Our work promotes the environmental health and well-being of our community and local residents by protecting waterways, trees, and other natural vegetation.

The GLT is a private, non-profit conservation organization with over 1400 active members.  The GLT receives no funding from the Town of Greenwich.  All funds for operating and open space acquisition are raised through private donations and our annual outdoor fund-raiser, Go Wild!

The Greenwich Land Trust owns both land and land rights (known estone
as conservation easements). We acquire these through donations from landowners and purchases by community partnerships and neighborhood groups. Our properties are diverse and wide-ranging and are located in every part of Greenwich, from the tidal marshes of Long Island Sound to the lush woodlands of the backcountry.

The GLT is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and has a full time professional staff.  Acquisition, stewardship and outreach projects are supported annually by the GLT’s Advisory  and Conservation Councils.  Additional work is done by volunteer committees chaired by members of our Board of Directors and supported by the staff. Every year the GLT benefits from the dedication, talents and skills of hundreds of supporters who further our mission through volunteer service.

The GLT is a member of the Land Trust Alliance ( LTA), a national network of over 1700 community-based land trusts throughout the United States.  Whether working with policy makers in Washington, D.C. or at the grass roots level in a community through a local land trust such as the GLT, the LTA is a powerful advocate and voice for conservation needs throughout the United States.  The GLT is proud to be part of an national movement to protect our environment for the generations to come. Because we all share the environment, our personal health and the environmental well-being of our community are forever connected. The Greenwich Land Trust (GLT) works every day to protect our community by accepting gifts of open space in Greenwich.  The GLT then cares for the properties in perpetuity.
